Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/4 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/4 cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 large Eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups Non-Fat Buttermilk
  • 3 Tbsp Unsweetened Applesauce

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Frying pan
  • Chef's Knife
  • Whisk
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking powder, ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together until evenly mixed. The spices should create a lovely fragrant mixture, and the color should be pleasantly warm.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, non-fat buttermilk, and unsweetened applesauce. Mix until well combined. The mixture should be smooth and creamy, indicating that the ingredients are well integrated.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour the wet ingredients into it. Gently mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if the batter is slightly lumpy. This textural contrast is what makes the pancakes fluffy.
  4. Heat a greased skillet over medium heat. You can use a bit of butter or oil to ensure the pancakes don’t stick. The skillet should be hot enough that a drop of water sizzles when it hits the surface.
  5. Spoon about 1/4 cup of batter onto the skillet for each pancake. You should hear a gentle sizzle as the batter hits the heat. This is a good sign that they’re beginning to cook!
  6. Cook the pancakes for about 2 minutes on each side. You’ll know it’s time to flip when the surface is bubbly, and the edges appear slightly dry. Flip them over gently to avoid splattering the batter.
  7. After flipping, cook for another 2 minutes until the pancakes are golden brown on both sides. The smell will be irresistible at this point, and you might even see a bit of steam rising from them.
  8. Once cooked, serve the pancakes warm. Garnish with fresh apple slices and a drizzle of pure maple syrup for an added touch. You may even want to sprinkle a bit of extra cinnamon on top!
  9. Enjoy your delicious Gingerbread Apple Pancakes with family and friends. These pancakes are sure to become a favorite!
