Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar optional
  • 1 ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • ¾ cup barbecue sauce of your choice

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Air Fryer
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. This step is crucial for achieving crispy wings. The preheating allows the air fryer to reach the right temperature, ensuring even cooking.
  2. If you prefer, you can cut the wings into drumettes and flats. This step is optional but can make them easier to serve. Just make sure to pat each piece dry with a paper towel. This helps the skin get extra crispy during cooking.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the chicken wings with canola oil until they are evenly coated. This will help the seasonings stick and give the wings that desired crunch.
  4. In a separate small bowl, mix together the dark brown sugar (if using), sea salt, black pepper, baking powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and cayenne pepper (if using). This spice mixture will elevate the flavor of the wings significantly.
  5. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the chicken wings and toss to ensure they are evenly coated. This is where the magic happens; the wings absorb all those wonderful flavors!
  6. Spray the basket of the air fryer with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place a single layer of wings in the basket. Avoid crowding them to ensure they cook evenly. If you have more wings, repeat this step for any additional batches.
  7. Cook for 8 to 9 minutes, then flip the wings over. Continue cooking for an additional 5 to 7 minutes until crispy. Keep an eye on them to achieve that perfect golden brown.
  8. Once done, remove the wings from the air fryer and brush BBQ sauce onto each piece. This step is essential for that saucy goodness.
  9. Return the wings to the air fryer and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the chicken. This ensures they are cooked through while retaining moisture.
  10. Serve the hot wings with celery, blue cheese dressing, additional BBQ sauce, or ranch dressing (optional). Enjoy your creation and savor each bite!

Notes
