Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Asparagus trimmed
  • 4 Tbsp Unsalted Butter divided, plus more to grease casserole
  • 2.5 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Half and Half (or equal parts milk and heavy cream)
  • 2 tsp Garlic Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese divided
  • 0.5 cup Panko Bread Crumbs

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Oven
  • Whisk
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400˚F and position the rack in the center.
  2. Prepare a 9x13 casserole dish by greasing it with a bit of butter.
  3. Arrange the trimmed asparagus in the prepared dish, packed down evenly for a flat surface.
  4. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 3 Tbsp of butter. Add 2 1/2 Tbsp of flour and whisk constantly for about 3 minutes until the mixture begins to turn a light golden color.
  5. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of half and half, along with 2 tsp of garlic salt and 1/4 tsp of black pepper. Continue whisking until the sauce thickens slightly, then remove from heat.
  6. Stir in 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese until melted and fully incorporated.
  7. Pour the sauce evenly over the arranged asparagus, leaving a little space on the sides of the dish.
  8. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for about 15 to 18 minutes or until asparagus reaches desired tenderness.
  9. While baking, prepare the breadcrumb topping by melting 1 Tbsp of butter in a small mixing bowl, mixing in 1/2 cup of Panko bread crumbs until evenly moistened, then stir in the remaining 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  10. Halfway through baking, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the casserole.
  11. When done, set the oven to broil for about 2 to 3 minutes or until breadcrumbs are golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and serve warm.
